To make a change to your will, you will need to create a codicil, which is a legal document that amends or supplements your existing will. A codicil must be executed with the same formalities as a will, meaning it must be in writing, signed by you (the testator), and witnessed by two witnesses who are not named as beneficiaries in the Will.
To create a codicil, follow these steps:
- Identify the changes you wish to make to your will.
- Draft a codicil that clearly sets out the changes you wish to make.
- Sign the codicil in the presence of two witnesses who are not named as beneficiaries in your will.
- Have your witnesses sign the codicil.
Keep in mind that if you want to make significant changes to your will, it may be easier to create a new Will rather than create multiple codicils.
Once you have created a codicil, it should be kept with your original will so that your wishes are clear and can be followed after your passing.
